Russell Wilson spent this season as the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, based on the way he and his team played toward the end of the year, it sounds like his time with the Steelers is expected to be over.

While Wilson showed promise early in the season, his play took a sharp downturn as the year progressed. Turnovers became a recurring issue and he struggled to lead the team to the end zone with consistency. This slump led to a five-game losing streak, including a disappointing playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card round.

After such a rough finish, it appears the Steelers were less than pleased with Wilson.

NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported this week that the Steelers had “frustration” with Wilson’s late-season struggles, casting significant doubt on his future in Pittsburgh.

“Wilson and Justin Fields are both free agents. Will either be back in Pittsburgh? There was frustration with Wilson down the stretch, so I’m not sure how far the Steelers will be willing to go to keep him,” Breer wrote in Sports Illustrated.

The compounding issue for Wilson and the Steelers is that this season, the veteran quarterback was playing on a league-minimum salary due to the money he was still receiving from the Denver Broncos after they cut him midway through his contract. If the Steelers were to bring Wilson back, they would likely have to pay him much more than he made last season.

Breer also highlighted that the Ravens playoff game was expected to “help set the course” for Wilson’s future with the team. Unfortunately for Wilson, the offense’s poor performance in that game likely sealed his fate.

“I’d heard before the playoff game Saturday that the playoffs would likely help set the course. Based on how the offense played…” Breer noted ominously.

He’s not the only NFL insider thinking that way. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk also thinks Wilson’s time in Pittsburgh is over.

“I will be beyond stunned if Russell Wilson is back in any capacity with the Steelers next year,” Florio said during a recent appearance on 93.7 The Fan.

While the Steelers have yet to make an official statement about Wilson’s status, all signs point to his time in Pittsburgh coming to an end, leading to a lot of reactions on social media.

“The Steelers should let Russell Wilson walk and let Justin Fields be their starter in 2025. If Fields does well, you might have your answer. If Fields struggles, you get a high draft pick to draft a quarterback. They can’t keep being stuck in the middle,” someone wrote on X.

“The Steelers need to sink or swim with Justin Fields as their starter next year. Bringing back Russell Wilson does absolutely nothing for them. It’s not like they’re a QB away from winning a Super Bowl. See what the young kid has,” another person added.

“If Russell Wilson is starting QB for the Steelers next season I’m off this app,” someone else said.

“I respect everything Russell Wilson has done but the Steelers need to give Justin Fields shot and see if he can make something happen,” another person wrote.

“You’ll never convince me that CURRENTLY Russell Wilson has more upside for the Steelers future than Justin Fields does,” someone else added.

We’ll have to see when the official decision comes, but it’s looking like Wilson’s time in Pittsburgh is over.
