For many years, the NFL has used replay to make sure calls on the field are correct. And it sounds like they’re now expanding the use of replay

According to a report from NFL insider Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, the NFL will be using replay to help make sure a few certain penalties are called correctly.

“Starting next season, the NFL will expand its replay assist to include helping officials on plays where flags were thrown on intentional grounding, roughing the passer and runner hit out of bounds . Replay assist will *only* be used when the flag has already been thrown,” Jones said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

Jones offered some clarification and specifics about what the officials will be looking for during these reviews.

“On intentional grounding: whether the QB was in the pocket and whether he was under duress.

Roughing: if there was clear and obvious video evidence that the defender did not make any contact to the head or neck area.

OB: If the runner was obviously hit while in-bounds,” Jones said in a follow-up post.

We’ll have to see how these rule changes impact the game next season.
