The Kansas City Chiefs “Tomahawk Chop” cheer performed during games has led to a lot of criticism from Native American activists who see the chant as demeaning and offensive. But those activists were quite happy to learn that pop sensation Taylor Swift does not participate in the chant when she attends Chiefs games.
Taylor Swift began attending Kansas City Chiefs games several months ago in support of her new boyfriend, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Since then, she has attended 13 different Chiefs’ games throughout the season, including their Super Bowl LVIII win over the San Francisco 49ers. But Swift has never participated in the cheer.
Rhonda LeValdo founded and leads a group called Not In Our Honor which looks to protest the use of Native American imagery and references in sports. And she claims that the group was watching closely to see if Swift ever participated in the controversial chant – but she doesn’t.
“We were watching. We were looking to see if she was going to do it. But she never did,” LeValdo said according to the Associated Press.
As a result, the group has used Swift to promote their cause, making signs that read things like “Taylor Swift doesn’t do the chop. Be like Taylor.”
The group may have a problem with the Chiefs’ name, logo, and cheers, but they don’t seem to have any problems with Swift.
