The Detroit Lions are having some trouble against the Patriots on Sunday in Foxboro, and plays like this certainly haven’t helped. While driving late in the game and attempting to mount a comeback in New England, Matt Stafford scrambled and – for some reason – went into a slide before the first down marker rather than staying on his feet and moving the chains.
Although Stafford slid past the first down spot, rules state that the ball is dead at the spot where the QB begins the slide, not where it ends. As you can see, Stafford began his slide well before the marker:
The bonehead decision killed the Lions drive and gave the ball back to the Patriots. Woof.
