The Los Angeles Rams are scheduled to face the Minnesota Vikings in Los Angeles on Monday night in the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs. However, massive wildfires in northern Los Angeles may threaten the game’s status.
Three separate wildfires burning across Los Angeles County have destroyed over a thousand homes, businesses, and other structures, resulting in at least two fatalities. These fires rank among the most devastating in the region’s recent history, and they remain unchecked.
Driven by the powerful Santa Ana winds, the fires have been advancing rapidly through northern Los Angeles. Although the downtown Los Angeles area has not been directly affected, the situation is still a significant concern for the NFL as the playoff game approaches.
For now, the NFL has decided to continue with the game as scheduled, but the league appears to be monitoring the situation closely.
“The NFL continues to closely monitor developments in the area and will remain in contact with both clubs and the NFLPA,” chief NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in an email to Pro Football Talk.
Even if the fires do not directly threaten the stadium or those attending the game, the air quality could become a serious issue for players and others involved.
A delay or postponement of the game seems unlikely, as the winner will move on to the divisional round of the playoffs the following weekend. However, the NFL might consider relocating the game if necessary.
Possible alternate venues include Phoenix or Las Vegas, as they are the nearest viable options.
For now, it appears the game will proceed as scheduled, though the situation remains fluid and subject to change.
