There’s a little known rule in the NFL in which a team is allowed to attempt a free kick after calling for a fair catch after a punt or a kickoff. Jim Harbaugh and the San Francisoc 49ers took advantage of said rule Thursday night against the Rams, attempting a 71 yard field goal to wind down the first half. Phil Dawson missed wide left as the Rams return man made the catch out of the end zone. The rule was last used in 2008 by Neil Rackers and Mason Crosby, but no one has made a field goal off the rule since 1968.
The 49ers slaughtered the Rams 35-11.
