Last season, quarterback Kirk Cousin suffered a season-ending ACL injury and he’s been working his way back to the football field ever since. But during a recent interview, he gave a pretty concerning update as he prepares for the upcoming season with the Atlanta Falcons.
During a recent appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, Kirk Cousins was asked about his injury. And he first gave a pretty optimistic answer, saying that if the Super Bowl were today, he would be on the field for the team.
“I’m good to go,” Cousins told Patrick. “I’ve told people for a while that if the Super Bowl were today, I’m playing. And that goes back probably — I think when I first got here, I was working out and we got maybe a week or two into my rehab and I did some drills where I said, ‘Hey, if the Super Bowl were today, I’m playing.’ And they seemed to agree.
“So, you know, once that tendon gets stabilized and healed and the tissue connects, you really just are trying to work through telling your body that you’re good now, because the brain still wants to guard and protect and it takes some time.”
That sounds optimistic, but later in the interview, Cousins said the words “Even if were to not heal fully, which I expect to,” when discussing his injury. This is far more concerning than what he said before, as it suggests that he actually has not healed fully from the injury and simply “expects” to.
The question for the Falcons won’t be whether or not he will be able to play in the Super Bowl in a few months, it will be whether or not he can play during the regular season. We’ll have to see.
