The Kansas City Chiefs have made it pretty clear that the team would consider leaving Kansas City unless the city voted for a sales tax to fund their upcoming renovations to Arrowhead Stadium. And now, it looks like that could be a real possibility as the vote failed.
On Tuesday, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas announced on social media that the city had rejected the sales tax, putting the Chiefs’ future in Kansas City in jeopardy. But he also made it clear that he intends to work to make sure that both the Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals remain in Kansas City.
“The people of Kansas City and Jackson County love the Chiefs and the Royals. Today, they rejected plans and processes they found inadequate,” Lucas said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
Over the months ahead, I look forward to working with the Chiefs and Royals to build a stronger, more open, and collaborative process that will ensure the teams, their events and investments remain in Kansas City for generations to come.

We’ll have to see what happens in the future.
