Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce is 34 years old, nearing the age when players start slowing down and considering retirement, especially at a position like tight end. But after he signed a two-year contract extension with the team this offseason, it doesn’t sound like the team thinks he’s slowing down just yet.
While most players do start slowing down by the time they reach their mid-30s, Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said “every now and then you have one of these guys that are outliers” and indicated that he believes Kelce is one of them.
“The odds of someone playing this far into the thirties are very low, but it does happen, and it happens with just unicorns in the profession, and Travis is one of those and we’ll certainly celebrate this with him and hopefully we can ride this thing even longer,” Veach said according to Adam Teicher of ESPN.
“So, we’ll just have to wait and see. But I’ve seen no signs of [Kelce] slowing down and everyone notices the kind of postseason he had, and he just found that extra gear and these special ones, these special players are always able to find that extra gear. If anybody could do it, Travis can.”
It’s not clear just how long Kelce intends to play, but it’s clear that the Chiefs still think he has a lot left in the tank.
