The Chiefs could look to leave Kansas City after a vote to use a new sales tax to fund their stadium renovations did not pass, and it sounds like one city is already pursuing them.
After news broke that the people of Kansas City had voted against the tax to fund the stadium renovations, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson made a post on social media indicating that he wanted the team to consider moving to Dallas.
“Welcome home, Dallas Texans!” Johnson said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
Johnson elaborated on this suggestion in a statement to the Dallas Morning News.
“Dallas was named the top sports city in the United States because we play to win,” Johnson said in a statement Wednesday to The Dallas Morning News, referencing last year’s Sports Business Journal best sports cities ranking.
“As I have said previously, our market is big enough, growing enough, and loves football more than enough to support a second NFL team — especially a franchise (and an owner) with deep roots here.”
Obviously, there would still be a long time before any move would happen anyway as the Chiefs’ current lease in Arrowhead Stadium is not up until after the 2030 season, but it’s still interesting that Dallas seems to be pursuing another team.
