The Kansas City Chiefs are at the top of the NFL after winning their second consecutive Super Bowl championship just last month. But even despite their dominance, it sounds like their future in Kansas City is a little bit uncertain.
This week, Kansas City Chiefs team president Mark Donovan admitted that there is a chance that the team could leave the city if residents of Kansas City do not vote to repeal the city’s current sales tax structure.
The Chiefs are currently planning $800 million in renovations to Arrowhead Stadium that the new tax plan would help pay for. And if the new structure is not approved, they Chiefs could choose to leave Kansas City.
“I just know that for us, the Chiefs, we have to look at all of our options,” Donovan said according to Fox News. “I think they would have to include leaving Kansas City.
“But our goal here is we want to stay here. And we’re willing to accept a deal, which is actually better for the country, to stay here.”
Obviously, this is some pretty significant news, and the NFL world had a lot to say about it on social media.
Threatening to relocate a team over taxpayer money is absurd and the worst part of American sports https://t.co/iDf9C632Pi

Every single time. This is a big reason why Oakland fans are fighting so hard. We know Oakland is just the first and you all need to be prepared. https://t.co/mcBDW4Js4p

The way these sports teams try to hold cities hostage. The owners are worth millions – sometimes billions – but are always looking for a handout to help *their* business. Taxpayers once again asked to foot the bill for the overtly wealthy. https://t.co/SCMbrl38Uy

Oldest strategy in sports. The sports franchise threatens to leave if they don’t get public funding. So gross. https://t.co/dwGXHsK4Tc

We’ll certainly have to see what happens.
