The Kansas City Chiefs have already threatened to leave Kansas City if the city does not help finance renovations to Arrowhead Stadium, and now it seems that the team has resorted to bribes – and people are not happy about it.
Last week, the Kansas City Chiefs made it clear that they would consider leaving the city if the citizens of Jackson County, Missouri do not vote to extend a sales tax to finance a new baseball stadium and a renovated football stadium. And now, the Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals are holding a potential $266 million donation over the city.
The Chiefs and the Royals have agreed to commit $266 million in “Community Benefits Agreements” to Jackson County – but only if the April 2 vote goes their way.
“It’s critical to mention that these historic CBAs are contingent on a majority ‘Yes’ vote during the Jackson County general municipal election on April 2. A positive result will not only keep both the Chiefs and Royals in Jackson County for decades to come, but also pour millions of dollars — $266 million to be exact — directly back into the community,” an article on the team Chiefs team website said.
Obviously, fans were not at all happy about this.
Chiefs fans and KC voters don’t vote yes. Hunt doesn’t want to move the team. He is just trying to get middle and low income families to mainly foot the bill here. Vote no. Send a message to people like Hunt. He doesn’t give a crap about you so why should you pay it? https://t.co/B5ranadWs4

Billionaires shouldn’t be allowed to make tax payers foot the bill for sports stadiums, unless the tax payers are going to get free attendance to games in the stadium they pay for. https://t.co/lDNn4DvtdJ

I don’t usually (ever) agree with Florio, but this is the vibe in KC. The threats are still there, but now they’re sprinkling a bit of honey on this turd https://t.co/QzRbCKzNXA

You think they would give that if it wasn’t being demanded by local government and activists? You call it bribery. Most would call it extortion to get what they want in return.

Chiefs fans have very recently had amputations due watching their team in cold conditions. Also some have been shot celebrating the Chiefs Superbowl win. Pretty sure the fans have paid enough.

The Hunt’s are worth billions and the people of KC let them act like beggars for millions in tax breaks and stadium funding, in the meantime, 72,718 working people households in KC live below the poverty level.

We’ll have to see whether or not the vote ultimately goes their way.
