Typically, an NFL team wants their offensive tackles to be the biggest players on the field. But it sounds like Los Angeles Chargers rookie Joe Alt might actually be a little too big and it’s posing a small problem for star quarterback Justin Herbert: he can’t always see over him on the line of scrimmage.
The Los Angeles Chargers selected Joe Alt out of Notre Dame with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and it sounds like he’s made quite an impression with his size. Standing at 6-foot-8, 322 pounds, Justin Herbert described him as “a mountain” during a recent press conference.
“We view offensive linemen as weapons, to have guys like that, especially at the right tackle position, is a mountain,” Herbert said according to Pro Football Talk.
And while Herbert is undeniably pleased with how physically imposing Alt is at that right tackle position, Alt’s height doesn’t exactly make things easy for him as he tries to simply see downfield.
“He’s a tough guy even for me to see over sometimes,” Herbert said.
Herbert will obviously have to get used to having such a massive player in front of him, but he’ll likely be glad about Alt’s size when it comes to protecting him from pass rushers.
