The Pittsburgh Steelers completely shook up their quarterback room this offseason, bringing in both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields this offseason, which obviously confuses things as bit as to who will start considering both were starters on their respective former teams.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has already stated that Wilson will be receiving the majority of first team reps for the time being, which makes sense when you consider Wilson’s list of accomplishments over the years. But he has also not yet named Wilson the unquestioned starter for Week One.
This means that Fields seemingly has a chance to earn the starting job still, a goal that he very much plans on attacking full-force this offseason.
In a conversation with reporters on Tuesday, Fields made it clear in a message to both Wilson and the Steelers organization that he has no plans of sitting on the bench for the entire 2024-25 season.
“I definitely don’t have the mindset of sitting all year,” said Fields via NFL reporter James Palmer. “I’m coming in every day, giving it all I got.”
The Steelers have two options. One is a an established veteran in Russell Wilson that has shown that he can lead a team to the promised land if he is put in the right situation. The other is a player with a ton of upside in Fields, but has yet to experience much team success yet in his career.
Only time will tell who ultimately wins the battle for the starting job. But it should be one of the more fascinating storyline to watch play out as we approach the 2024-25 season.
