The Pittsburgh Steelers brought in two new quarterbacks this offseason, signing Russell Wilson as a free agent after he was cut by the Denver Broncos and trading for former Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields. It’s widely assumed that Wilson will be the team’s starter to begin the season given that he is more veteran and proven, but Fields isn’t just going to give up the job.
During a recent press conference, Justin Fields made it clear that he has no intention of just sitting on the bench this year. He’s going to compete for the starting job and expects to play in some capacity for the team this upcoming season.
“I’m competing,” Fields said last week according to Steelers Depot. “I think Russ knows that. We’re competing with each other. He helps me get better. … I definitely don’t have the mindset that I will sit all year. I’m coming in every day, giving it all I got. I’m pushing him to be the best, and he’s pushing me to be my best each and every day.”
Wilson may very well still earn the team’s starting quarterback job, but it’s clear that Fields is going to give everything he’s got to earn it over him.
