When the Washington Commanders were for sale last year, billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was among the candidates to purchase the team. While he ultimately did not buy the Commanders, one report suggests that he could be moving to purchase a different NFL franchise that he has a much closer connection to.
According to a report from Chris Katje of Benzinga, Jeff Bezos is selling off nearly $5 billion in Amazon shares, which Katje speculates could be a sign that he is gearing up to purchase the Seattle Seahawks, given his connection to the city of Seattle.
“The Seahawks, who were valued at $5 billion by Forbes last year, are owned by the Paul G. Allen Trust. Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen previously owned the team before his death in 2018. The assets are expected to be sold in the coming years. Allen made instructions that the trust would be liquidated after his death with proceeds going to philanthropic efforts,” Katje wrote for Benzinga.
“While Bezos may have moved from Seattle to Florida, the Amazon founder will forever be linked to the Washington city and the Seahawks could lure him back to the city, at least on a part-time basis.”
Obviously, this is just some educated speculation, for now. But Bezos has expressed interest in an NFL franchise before, so it would make sense that he would try to purchase a team again.
