Last year, Gatorade teamed up with DC Entertainment to make digital comics for JJ Watt and Cam Newton. Now that every superhero seemingly needs tie-ins with a whole extended universe, this year’s Gatorade superhero roster has been expanded to also include Robert Griffin III, Peyton Manning and Eli Manning. The quintet even get their own superhero squad name “The League of Captains.”
They even have superhero monikers. JJ Watt is MegaWatt. Peyton Manning is obviously The Sheriff. Eli Manning is Big Easy (it’s a little goofy but so is Eli). The last two are a little more suspsect. RGIII’s TrIIIple Impact sounds like he belongs in an Xtreme 90’s comic drawn by Rob Liefeld. Cam Newton’s alias is The Blender which isn’t an awful name so much as it is kind of a boring one. Kitchen appliances don’t scream comic book excitement.
You know what does scream comic book excitement though?. Actual comic books. Gatorade and DC Entertainment have things covered from that end as well. Needless to say, they kind of have to be seen to be believed.
I really, really hope that these nicknames take off to such an extent that opposing teams start calling JJ Watt “MegaWatt” during a game.
