Throughout this offseason, it has seemed as though the Dallas Cowboys were prepared to let quarterback Dak Prescott play out the final season of his contract and become a free agent next offseason, considering the lack of progress made it contract negotiations. But it sounds like the team has actually decided they want to sign him to a contract extension.
During a recent interview with Dianna Russini on the Scoop City podcast, Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones made it clear that the team’s “goal” is to keep Dak Prescott in Dallas.
“The answer to that question is that we are optimistic that we can get these guys done,” Jones said. “He knows that. We’re having conversations with his agent and Dak, personally. Both Jerry and I. He knows our goal is to keep him here.”
Obviously, Prescott will command a large contract with whichever team he signs with, but Jones did not seem all that worried about this, pointing out that the Kansas City Chiefs have been able to win with quarterback Patrick Mahomes on a large contract, even with the departures of players like Tyreek Hill.
“We know what happens to teams when they have these high-priced quarterbacks at some point it’s a challenge to keep everybody,” Jones said. “The Chiefs are an example of that but they were able to survive not keeping Tyreek Hill and let some other top players, I think they let one of the top corners go after this season. You have to make some tough choices along the way. But we’re optimistic that we can do that. We’ll continue to grind away.”
Given these comments, it’s very clear that he team has decided they want to keep Prescott. Now, we’ll just have to see if they can make it happen.
