The Indianapolis Colts were officially limited from playoff contention with a shocking loss to the New York Giants last weekend. It was an up-and-down year for the Colts, who played musical chairs with the starting quarterback job, going back and forth between Anthony Richardson and veteran Joe Flacco.
Now, according to a report from the Athletic, details are emerging about what was transpiring behind the scenes in Indianapolis.
Per the Athletic, players were unsure about the direction of the franchise as the team played hot potato at quarterback.
“They were trying to hold (Richardson) accountable, which is understandable, but then the guy they put in wasn’t the guy either,” a Colts player revealed. “So when they went back to A.R., at that point it’s like, ‘OK, but what are we doing?’ That really affected the team.”
Players even went to meet with Richardson privately to let him know he wasn’t meeting the standard, including defensive tackle DeForest Buckner.
“I signed an extension here because I believed in you,” Buckner said to Richardson.
“But you’ve got to do your part.”
It’ll be interesting to see how Richardson responds in the offseason and if he is more prepared at the start of next season. It will also be intriguing to see if Indianapolis decides to move on and start over a quarterback.
