Minor rule changes happen every offseason in the NFL, but one of the most significant rule changes in recent memory took place this offseason as the league totally revamped the kickoff rules. But Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid does not sound all that bothered by the new rules.
The changes are designed to mitigate injury risk while also producing more kickoff returns. And as he tries to lead his team to a third consecutive Super Bowl title, Andy Reid says he is “not afraid” of the new changes.
“It’s different, I’m not afraid of changes, never really have been. This is different, it looks like it’s going to be exciting, I’m fired up to see how it looks — as long as it goes in our direction,” Reid said jokingly, according to Pro Football Talk.
Reid noted that special teams coordinator Dave Toub has been studying the new rules in an attempt to take advantage of them.
“He’s worked with the guys,” Reid said of Toub. “We can only use bags, but at least you get an idea of angles, distances, what the kickers have to do. He jumped right in with it, it’s obviously going to take some time to learn and there’s no better time than right now.”
We’ll have to see how the new rules work out for Reid and the Chiefs.
