Aldon Smith, who last played for the Oakland Raiders in 2015, was one of the most promising players in football. After finding trouble constantly off the field, Smith has been indefinitely suspended. His situation both with the league and with the law may finally be coming to an end.
Back in August of 2015, Smith was arrested for DUI. He fled the scene after his vehicle ran into a parked car. He later returned to the car where officers were able to apprehend the star defensive end and run sobriety tests.
After initially pleading not guilty, it appears that Smith has changed his plea to no contest after meeting with a prosecutor. As part of the plea, the DUI charge has been dropped and Smith instead of serving 20 days in jail will receive residential treatment. That likely indicates that he will be going to rehab.
The Santa Clara District Attorney’s Office has told TMZ Sports all of Smith’s required residential treatment sentence has been completed.
It remains unclear what the next steps for Smith are but this process appears to be over and it may indicate a return to the football field. Smith has been indefinitely suspended by the NFL for failing to comply with their substance abuse policy.
