This week, more than a dozen female athletes brought forth a lawsuit against the NCAA for allowing transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports and use women’s locker rooms at competitions. This comes after transgender swimmer Lia Thomas was allowed to compete as a woman and use the women’s locker room at the 2022 NCAA Swimming Championships.

The lawsuit claims the NCAA and Georgia Tech, which hosted the 2022 NCAA Swimming Championships, knowingly violated Title IX, the federal statute that guarantees equal opportunity for men and women in college education and sports, according to The Free Press.

The first federal action of its kind, the lawsuit demands that transgender athletes be ruled ineligible to compete against women and for the NCAA to revoke all awards given to trans athletes in women’s competitions and “reassign” them to other female competitors. The lawsuit “damages for pain and suffering, mental and emotional distress, suffering and anxiety, expense costs and other damages due to defendants’ wrongful conduct.”

Obviously, this is a pretty significant move against transgender athletes, and it led to a lot of reactions on social media.

It will certainly be interesting to see what comes of this lawsuit as this debate regarding transgender athletes wages on.
