A quarterback catching his own pass probably isn’t the rarest of occurrences on a football field. All it takes is the perfect trajectory off a deflection at the line of scrimmage, and, boom — right back in the QB’s hands. Normally, the quarterback would just fall on the ball and be thankful nothing worse happened on the play. Rarely, though, do you see a quarterback take the batted pass and rumble 42 yards to the end zone. That’s what Nelson Hughes, of North Greenville University (S. Carolina), did recently during a Division II matchup against Mars Hill University (N. Carolina). Hughes caught his own pass at the line of scrimmage and noticed a convenient wall of blockers (his original pass appeared headed in that direction anyway) and followed them to pay dirt.
