George Hill hit the go-ahead layup for the Pacers with 2.7 seconds remaining on Wednesday night and it might have well been at the buzzer, as far as Randy Wittman was concerned. The Wizards followed up a dreadful five weeks of basketball with a five-game winning streak earlier this month but that renewed excitement quickly fell off as they entered Wednesday’s game seeking to avoid their fourth loss in a row.
They were outscored by eight in the fourth quarter, capped off by Hill’s bucket in the closing seconds and head coach Randy Wittman was noticeably frustrated, so much that he had zero interest in Rasual Butler’s halfcourt prayer. While those heaves have little chance of reaching the bottom of the net, making it understandable that he had no faith, it’s still unusual to see a coach start leaving the court before the game was technically over.
And it appears he only looked toward the basket because his assistant coaches were trying to look around Wittman in order to catch the final shot:
