In a feature today on ESPN.com, Miami Heat forward Shane Battier proclaimed that he could beat every NBA power forward in a game of Jeopardy:
“I’m undersized every night, but I like to think I’m quicker in the mind,” Battier said. “If we’re playing Jeopardy, I like my chances against any power forward in the league. Print that.”
Considering Battier, an Academic All-American at Duke and one of the league’s most cerebral players, could potentially face the likes of Andray “7-Day Dray” Blatche, it’s safe to say his chances are good.
However, it almost goes without saying: this needs to become a reality, in some form or another. We already get a taste when Charles Barkley fumbles his way through a round of “Who He Play For”, so why not have NBA Player Trivia during All-Star Weekend? Players could be quizzed on the origin of team names — does Rasheed Wallace know what a Knickerbocker is? Do one-and-done players know any history about the schools they played for? And a spelling challenge would require players to spell the names of European teammates. The possibilities are endless.
Don’t lie — you’d watch every second of it.
