They did not get that. Instead, The New York Times, a newspaper of record, is now tasked with covering the worst team in the NBA. Sure, the Knicks are tied in the win column with the Philadelphia 76ers and Minnesota Timberwolves (all three have five wins), but they are still worse by virtue of four extra losses. It’s also worth noting that those are the only three teams with single-digit win totals. Even the terrible Lakers aren’t that bad.
Even more embarrassing is that the Sixers and T-Wolves have an excuse for their records. The Sixers are tanking, and the T-Wolves, while fun to watch at times, aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. The Knicks were actually trying this season. They failed, and now they’ve shifted focus to the lottery and the free agent class of 2016.
