The Golden State Warriors are champs on the court and of the salary cap.
Kevin Durant at $25 million, Klay Thompson making just $17 million, Draymond Green making $16, multiple vets like Omri Casspi making just over $2 million – there’s been some nice work done by the front office to retain a dominant core at an affordable rate.
With Thompson’s contract expiring at the end of the 2018/19 season, the Warriors might have to cut some fat to work in the star shooting guards massive new max contract, right? Wrong.
The Mercury News caught up with Klay, who said his $80 million Chinese shoe deal means he’s comfortable taking a discount with the Warriors.
“100 percent, it’d be different if I was making scraps off the court,” he said. “But I’ve been very blessed to be a part of winning team. When you’re part of a winning team, everybody gets to eat. So that’s why I’m indebted to the guys around me. Without them, I would not have the deals that I have.”
I’m torn. On one hand, it sucks the NBA’s super-est super team will never be split up because everyone loves each other and is willing to take less money to stick around. But, that whole idea is great. Thompson, Durant, and others are willing to take less cash because they know it helps the team and their future legacy.
So, if you’re hoping to see Thompson take a max deal and screw up the Warriors salary cap, this is bad news. For fans of fun, three-pointers and pure domination, the comments are A-OK.
