Here’s a look at what each American League East team needs heading into 2025.
Baltimore Orioles
Extension, please
The Baltimore Orioles have a special talent in shortstop Gunnar Henderson, and it would make sense to try to lock him up long-term with an extension. However, he’s not a free agent until 2029, when he turns 28. He’s also a Scott Boras agent; Boras likes his clients to test the market and cash in.
Henderson finished his 2024 campaign slashing .281/.364/.529 with 177 hits, 37 home runs, and 92 RBI. He was named to the All-Star Game for the first time and finished fourth in AL MVP voting.
The Orioles also have the young talents of catcher Adley Rutschman. While 2025 might be too soon to sign a lucrative extension for these two, or even just one of them, the subject will certainly gain some momentum.
Toronto Blue Jays
Speaking of extensions …
The Toronto Blue Jays tried their best to sign Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto, so it’s safe to say they have the means to extend four-time All-Star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. But why would Vladdy say yes when he could test free agency next offseason?
Either way, expect the Blue Jays to stay aggressive in their search for superstar talent.
Boston Red Sox
What is Casas worth?
It appeared Triston Casas was off-limits when it came to the trade market, but he reportedly was involved in a potential deal with the Seattle Mariners that involved Luis Castillo. Not that the team couldn’t afford it – they have plenty of arms at their disposal.
While the Red Sox are looking strong on the pitching front, they’re looking to add some hitting help.
Tampa Bay Rays
Plenty of pitching, but…
The Tampa Bay Rays made some impact roles despite sending starter Jeffrey Springs to the Athletics and outfielder Jose Siri to the New York Mets. They still added some pitching depth, and president of baseball operations Erik Neander feels confident on that front heading into spring.
The offensive side doesn’t look too bad with the addition of Danny Jansen, but it wouldn’t hurt to get another impact bat.
New York Yankees
Could they get any better?
It’s the New York Yankees, so it’s possible.
The Yankees stayed busy this offseason signing veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and acquiring outfielder Cody Bellinger in a trade with the Chicago Cubs. They also signed left-handed starting pitcher Max Fried to an eight-year, $218 million contract and acquired closer Devin Williams in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers.
What else could the Yankees look to add?
Perhaps another experienced third baseman? Now that the Houston Astros have signed Christian Walker, the chances they extend Alex Bregman look low. His agent, Scott Boras has been in contact with the Yankees. Nolan Arenado is on the trading block with the rebuilding St. Louis Cardinals, who have been in talks with the Yankees as well.
