Melissa Mayoux made MLB history on Sunday.
The French 16-year-old shortstop became the first female to be added to MLB’s international registration list. This means she will be eligible to be signed on July 2.
Obviously, at just 16, she wouldn’t be signed any time soon, though her addition to the international registration list is a testament to how talented she is. Mayeux plays for the French U-18 junior national team and hopes there’s plenty of baseball in her future.
“I would like very much to continue playing baseball in France until I’m 18 years old and then have the ability to leave for university or another opportunity abroad,” Mayeux said via MLB.com. “I’d like to stay in baseball as long as possible.”
MLB Director of International Game Development Mike McClellan spoke highly of Mayeux’s ability.
“She’s a legitimate shortstop who makes all the plays and is very smooth and fluid in the field,” McClellan said. “She swings the bat really well and is fearless.”
