Clayton Kershaw, who is in the middle of a ridiculous season, isn’t starting the All-Star Game for the National League. Instead, the manager of the NL team — Mike Matheny — picked Adam Wainwright over Kershaw.
It won’t be Clayton Kershaw starting the ASG. Adam Wainwright just walked to the podium.

When he’s not choosing the lineups for the All-Star game, Mike Matheny manages the St. Louis Cardinals. And, when he’s not starting in the All-Star Game, Adam Wainwright pitches for the St. Louis Cardinals. Hmmm….
Matheny on starting Wainwright: Lots of great pitchers in NL but “none more deserving” than Wainwright. — Jayson Stark (@jaysonst) July 14, 2014
So, Matheny thinks Wainwright and his 1.83 ERA is more deserving than Kershaw and his 1.78 ERA? Kershaw averages 11.8 strikeouts per walk — the best in the majors. He recently threw a no-hitter and had a streak of 42 consecutive scoreless innings. Nope, those numbers aren’t deserving. Why?
Matheny on why he went Wainwright over Kershaw: “Have the utmost respect for Clayton.” But Wainwright b/c of leadership & performance

Right. Got it. Leadership and performance. Better start working on that, Kershaw.
