Sometimes, the craziest plays in baseball happen at the most unlikely games, and that was certainly the case this week as a foul ball during a summer league game between two college club teams produced one of the most insane plays you’ll see this year.
During the sixth inning of a game between the Solano Mudcats and the Lincoln Potters this week, a Mudcats batter hit a popup that flew nearly directly into the air. The Lincoln catcher, Andrew Sloan, seemed to have a chance to catch the ball, but it tailed away from him and he was unable to make the catch.
But instead of the ball hitting the ground, it actually landed right on the helmet of the Mudcats batter. Making the play even more insane, one of the Potters’ players actually caught the ball after it bounced off of the Solano batter’s head.

“Go to a game and you never know what you will see,” Dartmouth baseball coach Nicholas Enriquez said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter, as he shared the video.
Though it was obviously a great play and incredible awareness from the fielder to catch the ball off of the bounce, it ultimately didn’t matter whether or not the ball was caught. Once the ball hit the batter in the head, the umpires had to determine whether to rule it batter interference on a ball in play, or a foul ball.
In this case, the umpire ruled the batter out on batter interference, presumably determining that the batter was either standing in fair territory or the ball would have landed in fair territory had it not hit him. So even if the catch had not been made, the batter still would have been out.
Regardless, it’s still an insane play that quickly went viral on social media leading to a lot of reactions.

Played the game for a lot of years and worked in minor league baseball for several more, can say I have never seen an out recorded like this before. https://t.co/etiNbPMkzY
