Note to disabled people in West Dunbartonshire (that’s in the UK, not Middle Earth): don’t pester the local council about building a wheelchair ramp leading to your front door, because you might end up with this nightmare.
Clare Lally, 33, spent two years campaigning for improved access for her daughter Katie, seven, who uses a wheelchair, after the council gave them a home at the top of three flights of stairs. But she was shocked at the solution, a £40,000 60-metre steel ramp which winds from the front door to the pavement.
In all fairness to the council, they did provide a home for Clare and her daughter, who suffers from bulbar palsy and is confined to a wheelchair. But, a ten-level ramp full of switchbacks to get to the front door? That’s cold blooded, man.
