Tyquone Greer is a senior at Orr Academy High School in Chicago. On March 9th, Greer was shot in the calf while attending a neighborhood gathering (six other people suffered gunshot wounds as well). He was discharged from the hospital that same afternoon, but had to watch Orr play its next game — a sectional semifinal — from the sidelines. He managed to play one minute the following game, a victory that set up a Tuesday night winner-to-State showdown with North Chicago.
“My leg was still kind of shaky, but this could have been our last game so I wanted to be out there. If we lost, I wanted to make sure that I was on the court with my team. That’s all that really mattered.”
Greer still didn’t play much (“He can’t really walk. He’s just hobbling around” said coach Louis Adams): two minutes in the first half, and sparingly in the second. Still, Adams inserted him into the game with 1:18 remaining and the score tied 65-65. With the clock winding down, and the score now tied at 68-68, Greer found himself wide open in the corner for a three pointer. He nailed it with three seconds remaining, his only field goal attempt of the game, sending Orr to the state tournament.
