Tiger Woods is perhaps the most iconic player ever to play on the PGA Tour and in professional golf. As a result, the PGA Tour has granted him some special privileges to reward him for his lifetime achievement.
On Wednesday, the PGA Tour announced that a sponsor exemption would be available for Woods to compete in the eight signature events, which feature limited fields, increased prize money, and FedEx Cup points, even though he would not normally qualify for the events.
The PGA Tour announced the news to its members with a memo on Wednesday morning.
“An additional sponsor exemption will be created to recognize Tiger Woods in his own category as a player who has reached an exceptional lifetime achievement threshold of 80+ career wins,” the memo obtained by ESPN states.
Woods would not normally qualify for any of the signature events as he has not been able to play in nearly enough competitive golf events to qualify for the competitions on his own as a result of injuries he sustained in a severe car accident in 2021.
As a result of those injuries, Woods has participated in just nine official PGA Tour events in the past three seasons, and the only non-major event he has competed in is the Genesis Invitational, which he hosts as it benefits his foundation.
Now, Woods will be eligible to play in more events throughout the year if he desires.
