After stepping down from the PGA Tour Policy Board back in November, Rory McIlroy has recently decided that he would like to return to his position. But it doesn’t sound like everyone wants him back.
During a recent interview, Rory McIlroy revealed that there was a “subset of people on the board” that did not want him to rejoin, so he will not be returning to the board after all.
“There’s been a lot of conversations. Sort of reminded me partly why I didn’t [stay on the board in the first place],” McIlroy said according to Golf Digest. “I think it just, it got pretty complicated and pretty messy and I think with the way it happened, I think it opened up some old wounds and scar tissue from things that have happened before … there was a subset of people on the board that were maybe uncomfortable with me coming back on for some reason.

“I think the best course of action is if, you know, there’s some people on there that aren’t comfortable with me coming back on, then I think Webb (Simpson) just stays on and sees out his term, and I think he’s gotten to a place where he’s comfortable with doing that and I just sort of keep doing what I’m doing.”
“I put my hand up to help and it was … I wouldn’t say it was rejected, it was a complicated process to get through to put me back on there. So that’s all fine, no hard feelings and we’ll all move on,” McIlroy said
Obviously, it’s pretty brutal news that McIlroy was shut down like this, and it led to a lot of reactions on social media.
Complicated, messy, old wounds, scar tissue. Just a sampling of the words Rory used here to describe the policy board situation. Not great, Bob. https://t.co/FktkfygX7J

Thin ice time for the PGAT. They're a few more defections away from being overtaken by LIV. Rory McIlroy is both one of the game's biggest and best players, and a progressive mind who's prepared to meet in the middle for the good of the game. This feels like a big mistake. https://t.co/E7EUECy70P

So many problems with pro golf right now:
• Big egos are obstructive.
• Signature events with 70-man fields & no cutlines remove so much of the entertainment factor.
• US production budgets being slashed for week-to-week PGA Tour events outside of majors.Extremely messy. https://t.co/hMjHdlWnky

Because a lot of the time McIlroy acts like a child. Can never make up his mind. He's always changing his mind. Perhaps breaking up with his fiance by phone after the wedding invitations had already gone out wasn't such an immature fluke afterall. https://t.co/tJa7r4jFm9

Clearly, McIlroy was not welcome.
