Jack Nicklaus is one of the greatest and most accomplished golfers of all time, and he thinks a large portion of his success is due to his relationship with his longtime wife, Barbara. And he pointed out that Tiger Woods was also at his best when he was in a happy marriage.
During a recent press conference ahead of the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village, Jack Nicklaus had a pretty clear message for Tiger Woods as he indicated that he felt like a happy and strong marriage was the best thing that happened to Woods professionally and personally.
“I don’t mean this in a nasty way, but I remember when Tiger was single and Tiger, then he got married and they said, ‘Well how do you think that will affect Tiger’s career?’ And I said, ‘Well, I think it will only be a plus,'” Nicklaus said.
“I says, he’s going to get tired of coming home and telling Butch Harmon, ‘Hey, Butch, I won another one.’ He had somebody to share it with. You want to share your career and enjoy the fruits of your work.”
Nicklaus certainly isn’t wrong, when you look at all that Woods accomplished after he began dating his would-be wife Elin in 2001. But perhaps it’s even more telling how much his career fell off once they got divorced in 2010 as a result of his infidelity.
