Bryson DeChambeau was able to clinch the U.S. Open championship on Sunday afternoon in large part due to a brutal missed putt from Rory McIlroy just a few feet from the hole. DeChambeau got pretty honest about how that missed putt impacted his chances to win on Sunday afternoon.
During a postgame interview, Bryson DeChambeau admitted the brutal truth that he was not sure he would be able to win the tournament had Rory McIlroy made that putt.
“I was going to try and birdie the hole on 18, obviously, if I hit a good drive, but pulled it,” DeChambeau said according to ESPN. “But I knew where Rory was. After my tee shot, I was up there going, ‘Man, if he makes par, I don’t know how I’m going to beat him.’ I just really didn’t know. Then I heard the moans. Like a shot of adrenaline got in me. I said, ‘OK, you can do this.'”
DeChambeau isn’t necessarily glad that McIlroy missed the putt, but he’ll gladly accept the result.
“Rory is one of the best to ever play,” DeChambeau said. “Being able to fight against a great like that is pretty special. For him to miss that putt, I’d never wish it on anybody. It just happened to play out that way.”
