Bryson DeChambeau John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

As Bryson DeChambeau was putting the finishing touches on his victory at the U.S. Open on Sunday afternoon, he was showered with “U.S.A.” chants from the crowd. But as one writer and broadcaster pointed out, that is pretty ironic given that DeChambeau made a pretty anti-American move in his career.

As eight-time Emmy Award-winning broadcaster and writer Judd Spicer pointed out on social media, it’s pretty wild that Bryson DeChambeau received so much patriotic support considering his salary is currently funded by Saudi Arabia, which is one of the least democratic places on Earth and has been guilty of countless human rights violations over the years.

“I’m continually befuddled by the support for Bryson #DeChambeau. And why the ‘USA!’ chants for a guy getting paid a gagillion dollars by one of the LEAST democratic places on the planet?” Spicer said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

Spicer is of course referring to LIV Golf, which is financially backed by Saudi Arabia and its Public Investment Fund. Spicer is confused why someone receiving money from a totalitarian foreign government is praised as being a patriotic American, and he was not alone in this criticism.

Clearly, people are not happy with DeChambeau’s portrayal as a patriotic American.
