10. Pat Tillman
Pat Tillman gave the greatest sacrifice for his country, his life.
A standout safety for the Arizona Cardinals, Tillman had a breakout season in 2000, posting 120 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 1 interception, 2 forced fumbles (and two recoveries), and 9 pass deflections. Eight months following the September 11 attacks, Tillman enlisted in the Army, turning down a $3.6 million, three-year contract from the Cardinals in order to serve.
Just five months after enlisting, Pat and his brother Kevin completed the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program and deployed to Iraq in 2003, participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following completion of Ranger School, Tillman became a fully commissioned Army Ranger and deployed to Afghanistan. During a firefight in 2004, Tillman was fatally wounded. For his actions he was awarded the Silver Star and became a role model for those that deem service to their country more important than personal wealth and ambition.
His number has subsequently been retired by the Cardinals and he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2010.
