It’s almost Oscar day and we have exactly two categories to cover. Best director and best picture. These are clearly two of the biggest awards of the night and it should be really interesting to see how it all goes down tomorrow. I’ll cover best director today and save best picture for the big day!
Here are the nominees for Best Director:
– Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan)
– David O. Russell (The Fighter)
– Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech)
– David Fincher (The Social Network)
– Coen Brothers (True Grit)
Oscar goes to…David Fincher. The man is a psychotic genius. I mean, he makes his actors go through 60 takes (at least!) before he likes something. I think that’s crazy. But he somehow makes it work. I won’t go into who I think could take this from him (Tom Hooper) because I want to instead talk about how appalled I am that Christopher Nolan was not nominated for Inception. I’m sorry, what? Ok, he is nominated for best original screenplay so I’m still holding out hope. I loved Inception. His movies rarely disappoint. I feel especially strong about this after seeing Memento again this past week. It’s the 10th anniversary of the backwards thriller and I swear it got better. And it’s actually just as awesome if you have seen it before.
Fun fact: Director Derek Cianfrance is probably the exact opposite of David Fincher. For his movie Blue Valentine, there were no rehearsals and he rarely shot more than one take per shot.
