Taylor Swift is perhaps the most famous woman on the planet and she only saw that fame further amplified when she began dating Kansas City Chiefs superstar Travis Kelce last year. But this weekend, there was a pretty big sign that her popularity might be falling.
The pop sensation released a new book that was released exclusively at Target on Black Friday. Taylor Swift and her team expected a massive demand for the book. But it sounds like they drastically overestimated that demand.
Even in Taylor’s hometown of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Enquirer reports that demand “didn’t come close” to what typically follows a Taylor Swift release like this.
“After dominating the entertainment industry with a record-setting tour and box office-shattering concert film, Taylor Swift released what was anticipated to be one of Black Friday’s hottest holiday items. But in Philadelphia, at least, the demand for the newly released Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour Book didn’t come close to the frenzy that follows when her concert tickets go on sale,” the Philadelphia Enquirer reported.
The outlet went on to report that most Target stores still had hundreds of books unsold after Black Friday.
One fan told the Enquirer that she was shocked by the lack of demand.
“Either they stocked up really good, or nobody is buying them,” the fan said.
She went on to speculate that the $40 price point could have been an issue.
“I don’t think people have the money,” she said. “It’s $40 for this book, but it should be maybe a 30-dollar or 28-dollar book.”
High prices have not stopped fans from showing up to her Eras Tour which sold out hundreds of shows across multiple continents over the past year and a half. But it seems fans were just not all that interested in the book – perhaps a sign of her dwindling popularity.
