Well this came out of left field. Weezer’s front man, Rivers Cuomo, is getting a sitcom on Fox based on his life. According to the folks at Deadline, the show is called DeTour and is being created by Psych‘s Steve Franks and Cuomo.
If you’re like me, you’re probably wondering what the show could be about. Cuomo lives an interesting life but I never thought of it as sitcom worthy. Sure, he wrote a song about a girl who lived in Japan that he was pen pals with and then years later ended up marrying. Sure, he graduated from Harvard University Cum Laude. Sure, he’s one of my favorite musicians and as I type this I’m wearing a Weezer shirt. How is all of that going to play out as a sitcom? In my mind I’m comparing this show to a new Weezer album, I always have so much hope for it but then I’m let down. That also means I’m absolutely going to watch this show when it airs.
Anyways, Deadline’s basic idea of the show is, “The series would mirror and embellish Cuomo’s journey with a fictional character and the small band of misfit friends that make it possible for one another to get through these formative years.”
Here’s the latest preview from Weezer’s upcoming album Everything Will Be Alright In the End. The track, “Go Away” features Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino.
