ESPN passed on giving the Arthur Ashe Courage Award to a 20-year-old fighting an inoperable brain tumor to achieve her dream of playing college basketball while also raising money for cancer research, in favor of Caitlyn Jenner, who recently identified herself as transgender. ESPN received a lot of criticism for the decision and decided to honor the late Lauren Hill, with her mother giving a speech on her behalf.

Lisa Hill, channeling her daughter’s good spirits, wanted to ensure that Jenner knew that her family had nothing to do with the criticism. Bearing no ill will, she just seemed overwhelmingly touched and honored for her daughter.
