Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban led his team to one final victory and SEC Championship this year against the Georgia Bulldogs, and the victory led to some pretty funny and foreboding comments from Kirby Smart to Saban following the game.
Kirby Smart recently admitted that after the game, he joked that Nick Saban should move into retirement because he “can’t keep doing this much longer.”
“I just said, ‘Look, I appreciate all you’ve done for me and my career. You’re one of the best to ever do it, and I have immense respect for you.’ And then I joked with him. ‘You can’t keep doing this much longer,’” Smart said according to ESPN.
Obviously, that’s a pretty humorous thing for Smart to say to Saban because the legendary Alabama head coach ultimately decided to retire from coaching just about a month later, and that SEC Championship Game would go down as the final victory in Saban’s storied head coaching career.
Saban and Smart have a close relationship as Smart spent several years as the defensive coordinator on Saban’s staff at Alabama before ultimately leaving to become the head coach of the Georiga Bulldogs.
That relationship is clear in these comments.
