Deion Sanders Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

When Deion Sanders became the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, he brought a lot of hype to the program and most thought that hype and energy would lead to a recruiting boost for the program. That has been true, considering where the program was before he arrived, but Sanders was dealt a pretty brutal blow on the recruiting trail this week.

According to college football recruiting expert Hayes Fawcett of On3 Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes have just lost one of their top prospects as four-star wide receiver Winston Watkins Jr. has re-opened his commitment after committing to Colorado immediately after Sanders was hired.

“BREAKING: Four-Star WR Winston Watkins Jr. (2025) tells me he has Decommitted from Colorado. The 5’11 185 WR from Fort Myers, FL Committed to the Buffaloes a day after coach Deion was announced Head Coach. Holds a Total of 22 Offers,” Fawcett said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

This brutal news comes immediately after the Buffaloes suffered a loss to the Oregon Ducks this weekend, falling to 4-6 on the season. After beginning the season 3-0, Colorado has now lost six of its last seven games in would need to win its final two matchups in order to become bowl-eligible.
