During her time with the Baylor Bears, Brittney Griner established herself as one of the most dominant women’s college basketball players to ever take the court. As a result of the dominance that she showed throughout her college career, she received a very important honor this weekend.
Ahead of Sunday’s game against Texas Tech, the Baylor Bears held a ceremony for Brittney Griner in which they officially retired the iconic No. 42 jersey that Griner wore during her time with the team.
And it was quite an emotional moment for the basketball legend.
“Just full of emotion,” Griner said during an in-game interview on the ESPN broadcast. “As soon as [the jersey] started to go up, that’s when I started to break.”
Griner was the two-time AP national player of the year and helped lead the team to a perfect 40-0 record and a national championship as a junior during the 2011-12 season.
She was individually very successful throughout her career with the team, but what she remembers most is her time winning with her team.
“When you look back at it, you start to forget about the stats. You just remember the wins, and you remember all the other things,” Griner said.
