Last week, New England Patriots de facto general manager Eliot Wolf declared that the team is “open for business” when it came to their willingness to trade the No. 3 overall pick, but that doesn’t mean it will be easy for a team to acquire the pick from them.
As Mike Reiss of ESPN pointed out this week, it would take an “unprecedented deal” from another team for the Patriots to trade away the No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.
“This is a franchise-altering opportunity, and as Wolf and first-year head coach Jerod Mayo have previously said, the only way they’re moving down is if another team offers an unprecedented deal. Leaving the door open for that possibility is good business more than anything; why close it before it’s necessary to do so?” Reiss wrote for ESPN this week.
If the Patriots do decide to keep the pick, it’s widely expected that the team will select a quarterback between Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye and J.J. McCarthy.
It will certainly be interesting to see whether or not a team is able to successfully acquire the pick from the Patriots, because that would certainly add a lot of drama to the draft.
