Women’s boxer Imane Khelif of Algeria won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics even though she was disqualified at the 2023 World Championships due to some highly scrutinized gender-eligibility tests. Throughout her run through the Olympics, she faced heavy scrutiny and harassment with people questioning her gender, and she is now taking the battle to court as a result.
Over the past several weeks, Imane Khelif has faced a massive amount of scrutiny and public backlash from world leaders, major celebrities and others who have questioned her eligibility or falsely and baselessly claimed that she was a man and not a woman. So after winning gold, she decided to file a complaint with the Paris prosecutor’s office through her attorney Nabil Boudi.
“Having just won a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, boxer Imane Khelif has decided to lead a new fight: that of justice, dignity and honor,” Boudi said according to ESPN.
“Ms. Khelif contacted the firm, which filed a complaint yesterday for acts of aggravated cyber harassment with the anti-online hatred center of the Paris public prosecutor’s office.”
The Russian-dominated International Boxing Association disqualified Khelif from the 2023 World Championships citing an eligibility test for women’s competition, but they have failed to provide basic details about the test resulting in her disqualification. She was ruled eligible by the International Olympic Committee and has competed as a woman for years before these Olympic games.
“The unfair harassment suffered by the boxing champion will remain the biggest stain of these Olympic Games,” Boudi said.
