As the 2024 NFL approached, Rashaad Penny was looking to get his career back on track.
Instead, the former Seattle Seahawks first-round pick’s career is coming to an end, with the Carolina Panthers announcing that they have placed Penny on their reserve/retired list.
A three-time All-Mountain West selection and consensus All-American in 2017, the Seahawks selected the former San Diego State star with the No. 27 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Despite his status as a first-round selection, Penny largely found himself buried on the Seahawks’ depth chart while battling injuries, but did enjoy a strong second half to the 2021 season, rushing for 749 yards on 119 attempts, and six touchdowns in 10 games.
Penny re-signed with Seattle on a one-year deal in 2022, but suffered a season-ending broken fibula in a Week 5 loss to the New Orleans Saints. He signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles for the 2023 season, but often found himself the odd man out in a rotation that also included D’Andre Swift, Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott.
This past offseason, Penny signed a one-year deal with the Panthers, who were hopeful he’d be able to contribute to their rushing attack. Instead, it appears that his career is now coming to an end before he ever took his first official snap with the team.
