Bill Belichick Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

After parting ways with the New England Patriots following the 2023 NFL season, Bill Belichick was not offered a head coaching position anywhere else in the NFL. But it sounds like he was offered a role with the San Francisco 49ers if he wanted it.

During a recent appearance on The TK Show with Tim Kawakami of The Athletic, Kyle Shanahan said he was “shocked” that Bill Belichick did not land another job after parting ways with the Patriots.

Shanahan actually revealed that he thinks so highly of Belichick that he offered him any role he wanted on his San Francisco 49ers coaching staff, including the defensive coordinator position. Belichick, however, politely declined the offer from Shanahan.

“I know what I would do if I was an owner, so that shocks me. … He’s the best and I like talking to him,” Shanahan said on the podcast according to Ari Meirov.

Belichick completed two different interviews with the Atlanta Falcons and seemed to be the frontrunner for the job before the team ultimately selected Raheem Morris, instead.

Now, Belichick will spend this season working as an analyst for ESPN and will have to decide whether or not to seek another head coaching position next season.
